Goblin and Gremlin
who surprised us with Gizmo have once again surprised us and
we now have an additional little baby called Gadget…...
Photographs of the new baby are difficult to get as he/she
still remains quite cautious. Our guests are just so enthralled
by the Bush babies jumping on their shoulders while sipping
their coffee before the early morning bush walks, that they
forget to take that wonderful picture. However, being nocturnal
they are again at the bar in the evening, and if the guests
are lucky will get to see them on their way out – the
little one is just so cute. ……
This year also saw the arrival of Micki – a Banded
Mongoose that was rescued from a pack of dogs. Fortunately,
we think he had some growing up with his group before this
traumatic incident, however, he is none the worse for wear,
and growing up fast. Last week we were given two baby Banded
Mongoose who had been hand raised, for companions to Micki,
hopefully with the eventual outcome of setting them free in
the wild, but as time moves on they seem to be more at home
in the house, no matter what we do to keep them out, they
are masters (monsters) of getting back in.
You don’t want to know what my house looks like. They
are in the cupboards, there is loo paper everywhere, Thomas’
is missing the inner soles of his boots, the patio looks like
a kindergarten, with items they find to play with, the dogs
have moved out and the cats have permanent frowns. It’s
hectic……..but an absolute joy.
Besides all this action taking place at our home, the Leopard
was spotted again in the very same area they were photographed
copulating. This is the first time I was fortunate enough
to see her during the last two years, but then I haven’t
been driving around as much. They have all been spotted during
the last four months.
If there are any guests who have photo‘s of our Leopards,
please would you send them to us or post them on TripAdvisor.
‘The Boys’ (our cheetah) are still doing very
well, with tummies full. It’s always a pleasure to get
that amazing photo of them especially when they are lying
down and yawing due to the full bellies and even that amazing
photograph of them with a kill.
We have a report back on the cubs and Casey who‘s leg
has healed is in great shape and so is lovely little Kylie
who still protects her brother. They have been transferred
to a larger camp with grass (at last) at the Cheetah Project,
and will be monitored daily. Depending on the sperm count
(when they become of age) they will either be selected for
the breeding project or returned to Hongonyi to roam free
in the wild. We’re hoping for the latter of course…….
The Rhino have been grumbling across the fence line with
the bigger neighbours Rhino, this is obviously a sign the
Jangles is maturing and protecting his interests with Jube-Jube
who probably thinks of Jangles as her small brother not lover,
anyway we are sure to have another surprise sometime this
year or next…..we keep forever hopeful.
The Lions are constantly at the fence line between us and
our neighbour, thrilling us all with their very loud and sometimes
too close for comfort early morning and late evening roaring.
I wouldn’t be surprised they are planning another visit
soon, (looking forward to seeing them).
Another spectacular sighting was a young Python and a Hornbill.
And there have been wonderful sightings of the Rhino, Vultures,
and the ever present Black Backed jackal.
Well until later, much love Shelly
